25.07.2024 – Update on FDA Announces National Academies Study of Supply, Market Competition, and Regulation of Infant Formula in the U.S.

On July 25, 2024, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) released the reportExternal Link Disclaimer of its independent study on challenges in supply, market competition, and regulation of infant formula in the United States and will host a webinarExternal Link Disclaimer on the report at 12:00PM EST. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) contracted with NASEM to perform this study to help inform the agency’s forthcoming long-term national strategy to increase the resiliency of the U.S. infant formula supply. The long-term strategy will explore new approaches to help increase diversity and enhance the resiliency of the U.S. infant formula supply and mitigate future shortages. 15.08.2024 FDA Issues Warning Letter to Manufacturer of Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Products Containing Elevated Levels of Lead and Chromium

On August 9, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Warning Letter to AUSTROFOOD S.A.S. (Austrofood), the manufacturer of the apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches that were recalled last year and that were found to contain elevated levels of lead and chromium. The letter is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to enhance the safety of cinnamon, ground spices, and other foods, particularly those consumed by babies and young children. 07.08.2024 Drugs (CDSCO):-Implementation of Schedule M and WHO Technical Report Series.

This is with reference to revision of Schedule M vide GSR No. 922(E) dated 28.12.2023 and various WHO TRS guidelines including WHO TRS 1044 Annexure 2 “WHO good manufacturing practices for Sterile pharmaceutical products” which are published by WHO from time to time. In this regard, it is requested that all manufacturers should take necessary steps for compliance with respect to various requirements as per above guidelines after due gap analysis. 16.08.2024 FSSAI:- Advisory Regarding Selling/Marketing of reconstituted fruit juices as “100 Fruit Juices.

This is in reference to the advisory dated 3rd June 2024, concerning the “Clarification regarding Selling / marketing of reconstituted fruit juices as 100% fruit juices,” which mandates that all existing pre-printed packaged materials must be exhausted by 31st August, 2024. 22.08.2024 FSSAI:-Clarification regarding Selling/ Marketing of Milk & Milk products such as Ghee, Milk etc. in the name of A1 & A2

It has come to the notice of FSSAI that several Food Business Operators are selling / marketing Milk & Milk Products such as Ghee, Butter, Curd etc. in the name of A1 & A2 under FSSAI License number. In this regards, it may be noted that the matter has been examined by FSSAI and it is opined that A1 & A2 differentiation of milk is essentially linked to difference in structure of Protein (beta casein). Hence use of any A2 claims on milk fat products is misleading and not in conformance with the provisions laid down under FSS Act 2006 and Regulations made thereunder. 30.09.2024 Waiver of Registration fees for Hawkers

Order Dated 30th September 2024   Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has decided to waive off the registration fees of hawkers and grant them the registration certificate for five years (5) [instead of giving option for selection of validity one to five years] when applying for new Registration.
